Research – Idea

Idea 1 –

Game title – Shootout Mania

For my first idea, I will be specializing in programming as I feel this is my strongest skill in games development. For this game, I will create a two-player static shooter where each player will have a PlayStation 2 Buzz controller each with two spares these may be used for more possible players opening the game for up to four people. The player will be given a randomized code made up of four colours (Blue, Orange, Green, and Yellow) the player will have to correctly input this code resetting progress for each wrong input, After inputting the correct code they will be able to press the red buzzer to shoot their opponent in two-player mode, for the three or four-player mode the player will have to input their code and then press the opponent of their choices corresponding colour and then the buzzer to shoot that player that last standing will win. I will be using asset packs that I find on the Unreal marketplace with a western style. This will meet my target audiences needs for action and violence as the players will have to be quick about imputing their codes so they can shoot their opponents and win the game hopefully adding a competitive side to the game.

Idea 2 –

Game title – Western Wasteland

For this idea, I am going to be specializing in programming again because I feel as though this is my strongest point in games development. For this game, I am going to be creating a multiplayer first/third-person shooter where the players have to kill each other while completing objectives such as capture the flag, domination, kill confirmed, and others. Each player will have a score and a kill/death counter so that they can keep track of their deaths and kills. After each game, a player will be allocated an MVP status to show that they achieved the most points in the round. This will meet the needs of my target audience of male teens and older because of the fast-paced action gameplay that the game will consist of.

Final Idea

For my final idea, I am going to be creating the games from idea 1. I have chosen to do this idea because I feel that it is more of a realistic project for roughly 4 weeks and I am not confident that I could complete a First-person shooter in that time, I also really want to create a game using the Ps2 Buzz controllers as I used to use them when I was younger and think it would be cool to implement them into a game now.

Here is a Mood board on the idea of the game I am going to be creating if features pictures of how I envision the gameplay to look like, Most of the picture are of cowboys and bandits have quick draw standoffs facing one another because this is how the game is going to be set up. I have also included a picture of the Buzz controllers that I am going to be using.

Here is a mood board on the types of weapons that I am going to be implementing into my standoff game. Most of the weapons in the mood board are revolvers because these are the main weapons that get used in these standoffs because they are quick and easy to draw and then fire, They are also lightweight weapons that pack a punch.

Here is a mood board of a Western-themed bank, In this mood board there are multiple pictures of different designs of banks that I am going to use as a reference for the environment and background of my game to make the environment feel more western and fit the theme.

Here is a mood board on different styles of western saloons. This mood board is going to help me by acting as references to the styles of saloons so that I can create some saloons to feature in my background to add the western town feel of the game. The player is going to be stationed outside of a saloon while having the standoff.

Here is a mod board on different types of western stores, these stores include: general stores, blacksmiths and Gun stores. These references are going to be helpful for when I create the town that the standoff is taking place in as I will be able to see what western stores look like and how they are mapped out.

Here is a mood board on different tutorials for Unreal Engine. These tutorials varies from level design to gun muzzle blasts and A.I. These tutorials are going to be helpful to me when i am creating the environment that my game is going to be set in and in this instance that is a western town.

Here is a mood board On different UE4 blueprint tutorials. This mood board is going to be useful for when i am creating the blueprint code for my game as i am still fairly new to the UE4 blueprint system as i have not had enough time to properly get used to it yet. It consists of different types of tutorials that i have found mainly on YouTube.bluprints tutorials.PNG

Proposal

Diorama or Level Title.

The Title of my Game is going to be Shootout Mania.

Outline – Describe the Diorama or Level?

My game will be a western shootout game where the Player(s) will place stationed outside of a saloon that they have been kicked out of because they have started a bar fight, they will then face one another and be prompted with a four colour code that they have to correctly input and then press the fire button on the Buzz controller. The game will be playable without the Ps2 buzz controllers but will be considerably harder as up to four people would have to scramble across a keyboard in a panic to input there code. For each incorrect answer, the code will be reset and the player will lose a life if the player reaches zero lives before shooting the player will stumble and shoot themselves forfeiting their place in the current game.

How will the design and art style meet the needs of your audience?

My target audience is Males aged 12 – 22, I believe the violent nature of this game will appeal to my target audience because of the interest in the violence of males in this age range as shown in my research here in my audience research.

Colour scheme.

The colour scheme of my game is going to be dark greys, Reds, Browns, Blacks, And Sandy colours I feel as though these colours would efficiently suit the theme and gameplay that my game is going to consist of. The building will be made out of the dark greys and woody browns, The environment surrounding the town will be made out of they sandy colours as the town will be set in a desert, the dark reds will be used for the blood, and greys and blacks for the guns and ammunition.

Specifics – List the assets, mechanics, etc. that you plan to include/create.

For my game I am going to need the following assets:

  • Gun Models
  • Character Models
  • Building models
  • Projectile (Bullet) models
  • Leader board UI
  • Menu UI
  • HUD

The gun models are going to be needed for the weapon that the players are going to use to shoot at each other to be able to kill one another and then win the game. The character models are going to be needed so that each player has a different look so that they can tell each other apart as the camera is going to be an over the head static camera as a first-person camera is not going to be needed as there is no movement at all. The building models are going to be needed to make up the environment around the player and add more to the story and plot of the game and make the game feel more western. The projectile models are going to be needed to add some detail to the weapons after firing so that the players knew who fired at who.

I am also going to create the following mechanics:

  • Shooting
  • Death
  • Colour codes
  • Keyboard codes
  • Controller codes
  • Multiplayer functionality
  • Leader boards
  • Timers
  • Tournament game Tables

The shooting mechanic is going to be essential to the playability of the game as without it the game is not able to win or lose the game as all the players will survive the entire game. The Death mechanic is also going to be essential as without it the players cannot complete the level or win the game because it will not be possible to have the last player standing. The colour codes are going to be needed so that the player cant just immediately shoot the players when the game begins and will add to the competitiveness of the game. The keyboard codes are going to be needed as an alternative to using the buzz and console controllers. The controller codes are also going to be needed to be an alternative to the colours and keyboards. The multiplayer functionality is going to be needed so that multiple people can play against people and have a leaderboard on how quick they were shooting the other players. The leaderboard is going to be useful to store the players fastest scores on killing the other players. The timers are going to help the leaderboards to keep up to date with the best times of the players. The tournament game mode is going to add competitiveness to the game.
